Simon and Mal from Firefly describe my 2011
Simon: Are you always this sentimental?
Mal: Had a good year.
Simon: You had crippling fatigue and depression, broke a laptop, and wore out your couch.
Mal: We're still flying.
Simon: That's not much.
Mal: It's enough.
This is like one of those buddy-cop movies where you’re the hard-nosed FBI...

Oh, joy....
Filling out disability paperwork. Having to not just admit, but advocate for, things I’d rather not accept or acknowledge.
Break here for those who don’t want the f-word on their dash.
I was in a fucked-up state of mind anyway. I suppose this is as good a day to have to do this as any.
I am comforted by the thought of how small we all are compared to the Universe, and therefore,...

Today I need a filter that only shows me kitties and puppies and bunnies and sunsets and good people. I am having a hard time generating the will to live in the face of politics, the economy, global warming, haters and trolls.
Note that I have left unspecified whether this filter should apply to just the Internet, or the world as a whole. I’ll take what I get.

The liberty of local bullies →
I have often remarked in the past how libertarianism - at least, its modern American manifestation - is not really about increasing liberty or freedom as an average person would define those terms. An ideal libertarian society would leave the vast majority of people feeling profoundly constrained in many ways. This is because the freedom of the individual can be curtailed not only by the...
I just spent 20 hours in bed. Woke up still tired....
My son is with his grandma and grandpa, playing in the snow in Flagstaff.
I’ve had some coffee, but I may end up going back to bed, anyway.
I should probably take all those medicines first that I have been prescribed for fatigue and depression, huh?

Another fine parenting moment
O and his friend: Let's play with the Nerf guns!
Me: Okay, but you have to pick up all the bullets when you're done.
O: Let's play with the guns without any bullets.
O's friend: Yeah.

The best part of today was not that he loved his presents, nor the happy dance that he did when saw some of them, nor even that he let me take a nap this afternoon while he played a computer game. The best part was that somewhere in the middle of playing with him, he and I had spontaneous conversations about what he wants to be when he grows up, and why his mom and I are not together. That last...

It worked for a few minutes
Me (picking up Legos): I guess you've got enough toys. Santa doesn't need to bring you any more.
O (playing): Huh?
Me: Look at all the toys. You've got plenty. It's okay if Santa doesn't leave anything this year.
O: Oh, I know what you're trying to do....
Me: I'm trying to get you to clean the floor!

Rambling
Our condos have a lame little area the kids call “the park”.
When my son first asked if he could go to “the park” by himself, I was confused. What park? There’s no park nearby.
Even as a playground, it’s pretty lame.
There is a slide and two swings, surrounded by that playground covering that is obviously made of recycled tires, ground into tiny pieces.
But...

Dear NASA,
coyotesqrl:
Please rename your Orion program, because every time I see a headline about it I momentarily think it’s referring to the older, aborted Orion program from back when NASA had balls, boldness, and budget.
It’s as if Yugo started selling cars again but named them all Testarossa and Modena.
N.B. Jack, this has nothing to do with your awesome son. In fact, he deserves better. He...

jesus, born of an illegal immigrant →
If Jesus were born today, it would have been undocumented and gallingly political, just as it was 2,000 years ago. He would have to be born to a minority people, an oppressed, exploited and mistreated people. He would have to be born in deprivation, in humiliation. He would have to be born in the context of kenosis, of self-emptying. Jesus would have to born in circumstances that would deprive...
