Hi, anonymous! How can I mind if you ask, if I don’t know who you are? ;)
The primary reason is that, for a while, I had hemochromatosis. That basically means too much iron in my blood. It turns out that I have a genetic predisposition towards it. An over active thyroid at the time contributed to the problem. Since my thyroid problem has been managed, my ferretin levels (one form of iron in the blood) have returned to normal. Long term levels of excess iron can lead to organ failure—particularly liver failure.
The secondary reason is that one of the blood tests I had a year ago could not rule out a rare blood cancer. I got retested, and was clear, but since then, we test it just in case.
Early detection can literally save your life when it comes to cancer, so if you are in a high risk group for any reason, please get tested.
Despite successfully dealing with the thyroid and ferretin problems, I still suffer from extreme fatigue on a regular basis. :(
