    I’ll never understand why Atheists put up Christmas trees and celebrate Christmas in their varied shapes and forms.

    And obviously there’s nothing inherently Christian about Christmas trees. I mean, point out a reason in the Bible for them and you might have a point, but at this point they’re obviously more indicative of a cultural celebration than a religious one, to the point that they probably detract from the religious significance of the event. So, instead, one might ask why Christians put up Christmas trees.

    Christmas trees are an adopted symbol that predates the holiday and the religion. It is frequently traced to the symbolism of evergreen trees in pre-Christian winter rites, especially with the story of the Donar Oak and Saint Boniface.

    According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, “The use of evergreen trees, wreaths, and garlands to symbolize eternal life was a custom of the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, and Hebrews. Tree worship was common among the pagan Europeans and survived their conversion to Christianity in the Scandinavian customs of decorating the house and barn with evergreens at the New Year to scare away the devil and of setting up a tree for the birds during Christmastime.”
